The Board of Education has decided to keep McCann's seat empty until the May 18, 2010 community vote. At that point, one of the seats up for election would be for the remaining one-year of McCann's term. In 2011, the candidate would have to seek re-election for a full three-year term.

Board of Education member Brian McCann resigns seat

Brian McCann, who was elected to a three-year term on the Board of Education in 2008, has resigned from the board. He was recently promoted from assistant principal to principal at Guilderland High School and wanted to devote more time to that position.

The Board of Education at its June 8 meeting discussed the three options available:

Hold a special election within 90 days. Most board members did not want to hold a special election.

Appoint someone to serve the next year in the position. That person, who would likely be interviewed by the board before the appointment, would then be eligible to run for the final year of McCann's term in the May 2010 election.

Leave the position vacant until the May 2010 election. The candidate elected at that time would serve the one year remaining on McCann's three-year term.

The board will continue its discussions at the June 22 meeting.
