GIVE awarded 2009 Youth Leadership Award by City Mission

Scotia-Glenville’s GIVE service-learning program was awarded the City Mission 2009 Youth Leadership Award on March 31 during a ceremony at the Glen-Sanders Mansion.

The award was presented to Bruce Kohout, director of the GIVE program, and to GIVE students Becca Van Auken and Kaitlin Straut. Marissa Mahoney, co director of GIVE's Mission Meals program, could not attend but is also an intricate part of the program.

“The GIVE students’ presence really makes a difference for us,” said Michael Saccocio, director of the City Mission. “This award is about how young people are demonstrating leadership in the community.”

Saccocio said high school GIVE students are involved in serving meals to City Mission residents, with the Christmas Tree lighting in the courtyard as well as other activities.

He also mentioned that the City Mission and Glen-Worden Elementary School grade 5 students have partnered for eight years to provide breakfast one Saturday a year to residents and there are connections with other Scotia-Glenville schools.

"The school district and its students do a lot for the City Mission," added Saccocio.
