Three candidates file petitions to seek two seats on the Scotia-Glenville Board of Education in May 15 election

Three candidates – Colleen Benedetto, Jerry Moore and Margaret Smith – have filed petitions to seek two seats on the Board of Education during the May 15 community/budget vote.

Current board member Joseph Crisafulli is not seeking a second term on the board. Each candidate collected signatures from at least 55 S-G residents to qualify to be on the May 15 ballot by today's 5 p.m. deadline. Each seat carries a three-year term.

The PTA Council will host a Meet the Candidates' Night at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2 at the Middle School.

The candidates are:

Colleen Benedetto, of 513 Charles Street, is seeking a first term on the board.
She and her husband, Ken, have three children: Gabriella, a grade 6 student at the Middle School; Alexandria, a grade 3 student at Sacandaga; and Nicholas, a kindergartner at Sacandaga.
Benedetto founded a home-based jewelry business, Just Charming, and has worked in the banking, retail management and photography fields.
She is a Scotia-Glenville graduate and attended Schenectady County Community College, where she studied child psychology.
She is involved with the First Reformed Church of Scotia as a teaching assistant in the religious education and as a youth group leader. She has held several positions with the Girls Scouts, is a division coordinator with Highland Soccer and is a member of the Sacandaga PTA. She also served on the K-5 Instructional Organization Advisory Committee and the Redistricting Focus Groups.
Benedetto is a lifetime community resident.

Jerry Moore, of 122 Jay Street, is seeking a first term on the board.
Moore and his wife, Ann, have a daughter, Kezia, a 2004 S-G graduate.
He is an attorney and has worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney and served in the US Navy as an electronics technician.
He is a former Schenectady County human rights commissioner and co-chair of the county's Jail Oversight Committee.
Moore received a bachelor's degree in economics and a law degree from Ohio State University. He received a master's degree in criminal justice from the University at Albany.
He has been a district resident for 15 years.

Margaret Smith, of 11 Vista Drive, is seeking a fourth term. She was vice president of the board in 2003 and has been board president since 2004.
She and her husband, Larry, have two children: Lauren, in grade 8, and Andrew, in grade 5 at Glen-Worden.
She is a teacher at A Special Place for Children Pre-School.
Smith received a bachelor’s degree in special education from Russell Sage College and a master’s degree in early childhood education from the College of St. Rose.
She is a member of the Glen-Worden PTA, has participated in the Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and is a eucharistic minister at St. Madeleine Sophie Church in Guilderland.
She has been a district resident for 12 years.
