Sweepstakes Class Wins 1,000 Books to donate to local charities; Literacy Volunteers to accept books at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20 Students in Becky DiCaprio’s Sacandaga Elementary classroom read 100 books as part of the national Whoopi! We’re Reading! Sweepstakes and have now been given 1,000 books to donate to several local charities. “This was a thrill,” said DiCaprio, who teaches grade 1 at Sacandaga. “My students got so much out of this contest and, on top of it all, now get to share the gift of reading with others.” The books will be donated to the Literacy Volunteers, the YWCA, Schenectady Inner City Ministry food bank and the City Mission of Schenectady. Liz Allen from the Literacy Volunteers will speak to the class at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20, to thank them for the donation. The national sweepstakes, sponsored by Scholastic Book Clubs, challenged 17,000 classes to read in October. DiCaprio’s class, which read 100 books, was among the 100 classes across the country who won the 1,000 books. Actress Whoopi Goldberg challenged classrooms across the country to read for the chance to give to others. For 59 years, Scholastic Book Clubs have provided monthly catalogues offering top quality books and reading materials from all publishers to teachers and students in pre-school through high school.
